ABSTRACT

Yogayog presents a society in transition where a decaying aristocracy makes way for a rising class of mercantile capitalists, causing a major upheaval in social relations, lifestyles and attitudes. The novel was serialized in the Bengali periodical Bichitra from September, October 1927 to March-April 1929. It appeared as a book in June-July 1929. The first two instalments of the serialized version appeared under the title Teen Purush. The third instalment in November-December 1927 carried a short note titled Namantar in which Tagore explained why the title had been changed to Yogayog, arguing that the old title would confine him to the schema of the family saga, while the new one would leave him free to adopt any narrative line he might wish to choose. The altered title is difficult to translate because it refers to a range of meanings.
