ABSTRACT

In this section we have presented empirical evidence concerning (1) the validity of Ainsworth’s categorical representation of individual differences in Strange Situation behavior (Chapter 12) and (2) recent efforts to develop continuous latent variables underlying individual differences in Strange Situation behavior (Chapter 13). In this chapter, we summarize these findings and then offer recommendations concerning design, measurement, and analytic strategies that might benefit future research. Since the bulk of relevant research is longitudinal in character, we have emphasized means of ameliorating some of the problems that plague longitudinal research designs concerned with topics as complex as the development of attachment relationships.
