ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters the risks of polarised relationships have been discussed. We have seen that a more helpful process can be initiated by a teacher when he or she stops colluding with being idealised or denigrated. This also often results in the teacher feeling more hopeful. As one teacher put it at a review meeting: ‘I feel I have been given an “injection of hope” by this course.’ The following examples may show how understanding helped to engender hope and modify for some of the teachers the perception of their job.
