It is clear from Tables 1-3 in chapter 3 that male-and female-reported preferences for films and television programmes are often aligned with those popular genres associated with the masculine and feminine within our culture and therefore with men and women in our society. This chapter will look at the ways in which the women expressed their enjoyment in and relationship to the various films and television programmes which have been discussed in the previous chapter. As we saw in chapter 2, reading was an important activity for many women and their discussions of different genres of text provide a counterpoint to accounts of their engagement with visual media. In this context, albeit to a lesser extent, radio also figures.
