ABSTRACT
Broadly speaking, the modes of comparison known as metaphor and simile have attracted two different kinds of analysis, one rhetorical and the other hermeneutic. Rhetorical analysis is addressed primarily to writers and of offers advice on how to use metaphors; hermeneutic analysis is addressed to readers and attempts to theorize problems of interpretation caused by the presence of metaphor in all texts, literary or otherwise.
