ABSTRACT

The season contained only two premières-of Julius Caesar on 2 October 1903, and The Cherry Orchard on 17 January 1904. Stanislavsky retired into his shell somewhat after The Lower Depths, although much time and effort were spent in mastering the role of Brutus. He was also preoccupied with reorganising the Theatre and with disagreements which were a consequence of this and which had led to the departure of Meyerhold, Sanin and others. He also began work on the director’s score of a Turgenev play, The Parasite, although he did not stage it until 1912.
