ABSTRACT

Self-inflicted death is a subject of mystery and stigma. Society once condemned posthumously those assumed to have willfully died (Alvarez, 1973). Not until the advent of psychoanalysis and sociology at the end of the 19th century was a more rational and scientific perspective brought to bear on the act deemed willful and therefore sinful.
