ABSTRACT
In 1835 George Pulham, a twenty-two-year-old agricultural labourer, was executed at Bury St Edmunds for arson. On the scaffold, he was reported as saying:
Good bye, good bye, and God bless you all. I hope my fate will be a warning to you all, and I hope you gentlemen farmers will give the young men work; it was the want of work that brought me to this. 1
