ABSTRACT

A significant proportion of national populations live in urban areas which will continue to grow rapidly even if policies aimed at retaining population in the rural areas succeed. UN estimates show that by the end of the century, if present trends continue, over half the population in Tanzania and Zimbabwe and nearly 80 per cent in Zambia will be living in urban areas. Even if such extrapolation of existing trends is unrealistic, urban areas are likely to absorb a considerable proportion of population growth (see Table 5.1).
