ABSTRACT

Mental illness is a major problem in modern society, and the various anxiety disorders represent the most prevalent forms of mental illness. In the United States it is estimated that approximately 7.3% of the adult population suffers from an anxiety disorder to a degree that warrants some form of treatment (Regier et al., 1988). Complaints related to the experience of stress-related emotions such as anxiety are even common among healthy individuals, and these problems often have consequences for physical health (Cohen, Tyrell, & Smith, 1991; Craufurd, Creed, & Jayson, 1990).
