ABSTRACT

Marcella Althaus-Reid discusses the manner in which transvestism is potentially subversive of a hegemonic sexual theology. This chapter proposes that a more adequate theological response to intersex/DSD might be facilitated by reflection on transgender which does not start from a position of assuming its pathology or inadequacy. The responses to transgender by the Church of England and the Evangelical Alliance in particular often seem to rest in particular scriptural texts, and do not necessarily adequately question heteronormative readings of these. Some Christians therefore oppose sex reassignment surgery (SRS), or people living permanently in a transgender identity role, because this will lead to homosexual relationships. The chapter acknowledges Deryn Guest's caution, but still considers it expedient to reflect on biblical attitudes to eunicism not because it is necessarily synonymous with transgender, but because it provides one instance whereby a condition 'missing' from the scriptural narratives might be read analogously into it.
