ABSTRACT

The state hospital can be a rewarding workplace for a clinical manager. Certainly there are many problems. There are never enough resources to meet the need, the clinical problems of the patients can be intractable, the state system can be frustrating, and there are always pressures to cut back. But the work is important to people with severe mental illness, and it is generally fascinating. It can be very rewarding to see how skillful management can make a real difference in the lives of patients and employees.
