ABSTRACT

The declaration of the Armistice dealt a severe blow to American cinema. Anticipating a continuation of the conflict, producers had invested heavily and many new war films were ready for release. Hasty re-editing and extensive publicity (often stressing that the picture was not a war story) ensured partial success but it was clear that exhausted viewers had turned against the genre. Many large budgets proved wasted, exacerbating an already difficult financial situation in Hollywood as the war film faded away.
