ABSTRACT

It is ironic that as civilization develops and the major killing diseases of the past are gradually eradicated, there is a steady rise in modern stress diseases such as coronaries, hypertension, and mental illhealth. It is salutary to realize that in Britain with an adult population of 46 million, no less than 10 million people receive prescriptions for some kind of mind-affecting drug. While people grumble about losing 15 to 20 million working days a year through industrial disputes, something like 33 million working days a year are lost through ill-health.
