ABSTRACT

Almost all of the various forms of psychotherapy developed to ameliorate the effects of single event trauma advocate concentrating on the content of the traumatic experience (see, e.g., French & Harris, 1999; Foa & Rothbaum, 1998; Meadows & Foa, 1999; Resick et al., 1988; Shapiro, 1995). This is a reasonable procedure for those survivors whose general functioning may have been compromised by the trauma, but was not significantly impaired before the circumscribed traumatic event occurred. The effectiveness of this method with individuals who have been exposed to a single traumatic incident is well documented in the empirical literature (Foa & Rothbaum, 1998; Meadows & Foa, 1999; Resick et al., 1988).
