ABSTRACT

If, as noted by the authors of this text, substance abuse kills the heart and murders the soul, it is no more apparent than in the context of the effects of substance use upon mothering and child rearing. As noted in Chapter 2, Explaining Substance Use Among Women, citing the early classic study of female alcoholics by Wall (1937), "Their attitude toward their children was either one of indifference or neglect. In most instances the children were unwanted . . . " (p. 952).
