ABSTRACT

Substance use affects all North American women directly or indirectly, regardless of age, culture, ethnicity, education, race, or socioeconomic status (Clemenger, 1993; Hoffman & Goldfrank, 1990; Johnson, 1990). Even women in rural America, who were once thought to be protected from the scourges of substance use, find themselves affected in a variety of ways and demonstrate patterns of use similar to those observed among women in urban settings (Chaiken, 1995; Morra, 1992).
