ABSTRACT
Standardized tests can be either norm based or criterion referenced. A norm-based test is one which provides an ‘achievement age’; that is to say, it compares the achievement of a particular child on the test with the achievements of his peers. In contrast, a criterionreferenced test is designed to test if set criteria of achievement have been met, for example, the ability to add two three-digit numbers with one ‘carrying’.
