ABSTRACT

I have chosen the title ‘Dimensions of the grandparent role’ for this chapter. My intention is to abolish the myth of a monolithic conception of grandparenthood and instead show that it is a multidimensional role. It is a role which, more than most family roles, has a history, and one of the longest histories of family roles in that the individual who occupies this role has had time to become accustomed to it; but, at the same time, it has perhaps the most old-fashioned models for this role.
