ABSTRACT

After decades of benign neglect, grandparents have been ‘rediscovered’. In 1978, the US Congress passed legislation setting the first Sunday after Labor Day (in September) as Grandparents Day. American grandchildren and their parents now purchase millions of Grandparents Day cards each year. However, the political and commercial attention paid to grandparents is not quite matched by our scientific knowledge about their roles and the nature of their interactions with their children and grandchildren. This chapter will review what we do know about grandparent-grandchild relations among the different ethnic groups in the USA.
