ABSTRACT
Despite the rich literature devoted to identifying the cognitive processes underlying reading (see chapter 1 for review), there is little agreement on the neural substrates underlying each of these component processes. Two major types of investigations have been devoted to the neuroanatomicallocalization of the representations and mechanisms involved in reading: (1) lesiondeficit correlation studies, and (2) functional imaging studies. In both domains, studies have yielded conflicting results, as delineated below. However, there have been points of convergence as well. In this chapter, each method for identifying the neural bases of reading and the potential pitfalls of each method will be briefly reviewed. Then, candidate sites of each level of representation in the reading process will be discussed.
