ABSTRACT

How does the propulsion model relate to other views on creativity? In this chapter, we review briefly some of the history of the study of creativity (see Albert & Runco, 1999, for more details). In our analysis (based in large part on Sternberg & Lubart, 1996, 1999), we consider some of the main approaches to studying creativity, including mystical, pragmatic, psychoanalytic, psychometric, cognitive, and social-personality approaches. We then consider what we believe to be the most promising approach for future work on creativity, the confluence approach. In discussing each approach, we attempt to discuss its relation to our proposed propulsion model.
