ABSTRACT

Many research as well as review articles conclude with an appeal for further research on the phenomenon with which they deal. Underlying this appeal is the assumption that further research will tell us more than we already know about the phenomenon under investigation. The general thesis of this essay however, is that “further research” does not necessarily lead to the accumulation of new and true understanding. Rather, one can do more and more research on a phenomenon and, paradoxically, end up knowing less and less about the phenomenon under investigation.
