ABSTRACT

There are some who argue that sport is all pervasive in advanced Western industrial societies. In the light of the growing international interest in such events as the World Cup or the Olympic Games, perhaps these claims need to be

revised upwards. At the very least it would seem reasonable to concur with Kenyon’s assertion that ‘the cognitive world of most people includes sports’ (Kenyon, 1969: 79-80). This chapter examines how such awareness is translated into attitudes and behaviour.
