ABSTRACT
When we walked into the room , the chairs said it all. In front were the lush, cushioned chairs, like thrones. They were for the monks. Next were the chairs with arms for the senators and for us. And behind them were the regular conference chairs for everyone else. The chairs were arranged in rows with a divide in the middle. On one side sat all the men while on the other were the women-the social structure made visible.
