ABSTRACT

The redoubt, like the Ruins, was garrisoned by a seasoned regiment, the 28th 'Slashers' commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Paget. A younger son of the Earl of Uxbridge, he had commanded his regiment for the past seven years since the age of 18 and had been wounded at their head in Holland in 1795. Brave and firm, courteous and well connected, he had a distinguished future.
