Belliard's fate was now inevitable; but it could still have been deferred. He could have forced the allies to open laborious siege operations; and when his curtain wall was breached he could have withdrawn into the citadel and prolonged the defence for three more weeks. Thus he would have won time for Menou and delayed the attack on Alexandria.
