ABSTRACT

UDAYANA (920-990): A commentator on the Nyāya-sutra of Gautama, Udayana Acārya (“Dr. Udayana,” “Acārya” meaning “one who knows or teaches the rules,” a title given to great spiritual teachers) wrote that while doubt is necessary for philosophy, it must be given up when it leads to contradiction: if two terms are contradictory, they cannot be identical, nor can there be any other alternative between them.
