Critical Essays (Lun Heng) was the title of his principal work. The title (following Wing-tsit Chan) may also be translated Balanced Inquiries, or Fair Discussions. Wang refused to follow authoritative systems of belief, and instead demanded hard evidence for any assertion said to be true. He opposed the YinYang school, and denied that any interaction takes place between Heaven and earth, using the following argument:

The Way of Heaven is that of spontaneity, which consists of non-activity. However, if Heaven were to reprimand men, that would constitute action, and would not be spontaneous.
