ABSTRACT
Students of philosophy are very familiar with this theory. It is an attractive conception, and seems to come naturally to mind when we think about perception, knowledge, thought and language in certain plausible ways. But despite its appeal and its long and illustrious career, it is extremely difficult even to state the theory precisely and intelligibly. That was no obstacle to its having the enormous historical influence it has had.
