ABSTRACT

The first chapter raised the question ‘What is teaching?’, and presented a model of teaching as an intentional, interactive process. Using this perspective, succeeding chapters have explored teaching in the main modes encountered in higher education: lecturing, small group sessions, laboratory work, and individual research or project supervision. It is now time to pose two complementary questions: ‘How do students learn?’ and ‘How can we help students to learn more effectively?’. This chapter considers the first of these questions; Chapter 8 gives some suggestions in answer to the second.
