ABSTRACT
Practical work has a time-honoured place in the education of scientists and engineers. Most practical work occurs in laboratories but fieldwork, placements, and sandwich courses are also important features of some courses. In this chapter we will be looking primarily at the uses, skills, and methods of laboratory work, although many of the activities, hints, and suggestions that we offer also apply to the organization of field-work, placements, and sandwich courses.
