ABSTRACT
The medical paradigm survives the onslaught from its competitors-the causal thesis remains intact. Here we must examine whether the conceptual thesis is true-whether diseases are malfunctions. I will first summarize the arguments showing that there is no fact of the matter whether some condition is a disease, and then defend an evaluative definition of mental illness. Finally, I will look at the boundaries of mental illness.
