ABSTRACT

It is a basic conclusion from the evidence reviewed in this book that there is nothing inherently ‘deviant’ or ‘abnormal’ in the use of psychoactive drugs. Most people do use such substances. While the actions described in this book all involve possible adverse consequences, the majority are essentially normative and familiar. The reason they are matters for concern are because they are widespread. The greater the use of drugs and the more frequent the sexual encounters, the greater the risk of misuse. The ‘official’ view, as propounded by health professionals, researchers and policy makers, is that heavy drinking, the use of tobacco and illicit drugs and unprotected sex are all risky.
