ABSTRACT

Part III focuses on three important issues in drug enforcement. In this chapter we look at detectives who, traditionally, have been regarded as the ‘elite’ of the police. The relations between detectives and their informants remain full of promise and danger. Chapter 9 describes the ascendancy of a rising elite – intelligence officers. Drugs intelligence constitutes the means whereby detective work is becoming directed from the centre. Finally, in Chapter 10 we examine penalties.
