ABSTRACT

Seizures are a common problem in children, with between 4 and 10% having at least one seizure at some time. By 20 years of age approximately 1% of the population can be expected to have had a diagnosis of epilepsy or repeated seizures (Hauser, 1994). Epilepsy is a pervasive disorder that can disrupt a child's physical, psychosocial and academic functioning. Thus it is essential to consider overall quality of life in the measurement of outcome in children with epilepsy. In this chapter we will review the potential problems associated with epilepsy, concentrating on the psychosocial and academic troubles affecting children and their families.
