ABSTRACT

The use o f definite and indefinite articles i n Ca ta lan is on the whole comparable wi th the use o f the cor responding forms i n Eng l i sh ; we shall draw special attention to the most impor tan t differences. One general point wor th m a k i n g at the start is that a n o u n i n a noun phrase which is the subject o f a clause and precedes the verb nearly always has an article, definite or indefinite ( i f it has no other determiner):

Venien protestes de molts sectors (not *Protestes venien . . . ) . Protests came from many sectors.
