ABSTRACT

If geographical work is to be implemented successfully, a ‘whole-school’ approach is essential. This approach requires the head teacher and staff to engage in consultation which results in the articulation of a set of principles, goals and practical statements which provide overall direction for teaching and learning of the subject. In the first instance, a decision must be made as to whether geography and environmental education are to have separate or linked policy documents. This is a matter for individual schools to decide: perhaps ideally a pair of linked documents is most helpful; that is, a policy for geography, a policy for environmental education and a statement giving practical guidance on the overlap between the two, in terms of content, organisation and resources. Whatever approach to document production is used, the following structure and suggested content should be helpful.
