ABSTRACT

The National Curriculum Order for Geography provides a much needed rationale for teaching and learning in this subject area, and addresses a number of fundamental criticisms which have been directed at teaching and learning in geography; notably the lack of attention that has been paid in schools to the distinctive contribution that geography can make to children’s learning, and the traditional limitations of study in this area. From the outset, however, it must be emphasised that while National Curriculum documentation for the early years is obviously referred to and incorporated in the forthcoming pages, this volume discusses general principles of teaching and learning in geographical education applicable to all ‘early years’ children of school age, that is, in the first three years in school.
