ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1, I said that the methodology of the book as a whole is one which questions the abstractions assumed by most philosophy, drawn as they are from the experiences and preoccupations of white, Western males. This questioning will be helped by using critical autobiographical material to discover and understand alternative perspectives of those who are not white, Western males. Throughout the book I call on experience (my own and that of others) in order to critique or construct theories and abstractions. Thus, in the course of developing my arguments I find I need to tell stories which are crucial to the critique and creation of theory.
