ABSTRACT

Earlier, Freud had drawn attention to the girl'sjwoman's envy of the boy/man for possessing a penis (1933). Mrs Klein fouud that equally men were envious of female organs of procreation and that men and women envied others of their own sex who were superior in some way. Envy relates to the creative functions associated with sexual organs: not just the possession of a penis but male potency, also in the wider sense of male assertiveness and penetrating intellectual power. Equally, a woman's capacity to grow and nourish an infant and female intuition and sensitivity can become objects of envy. Envy may extend further to the couple who are creative together.
