ABSTRACT

WehaveoutlinedinChapter2themethodologyweuseindescribing thelinguisticfeaturesofanytext.Inthefirstinstance,theprocedures forapproachingstylisticanalysisarenodifferentfromthosemadeuse ofinanydescriptivelinguisticexercise:theprimarytaskistocatalogue andclassifyfeatureswithintheframeworkofsomegenerallinguistic theory.Ouraimistoproduce,initially,aninventoryofinterrelated contrasts.Ultimately,wewouldexpectanydescriptivelyadequate grammartoincorporate,aspartofitsrules,allstylisticallysignificant information.Wearenotconcerned,ashasbeenpointedout,withthe descriptionofeverythingthatgoesonwithinatext,butonlywiththat whichcanbeshowntobeofstylisticimportanceinthesensediscussed inChapter2.Tostudyeverythingwouldproduceanundesirable conflationofthenotionsofstylisticsandlinguistics.Wenowhaveto goastagefurtheranddiscusshowwelinkourlinguisticanalysiswith thestylisticpurposeoftheexercise.Whatarethetheoreticalnotions thatneedtobeestablishedinordertobridgethegapbetweenthe descriptionofalanguage,ontheonehand,andthedescriptionofa varietyofthatlanguage,ontheother?
