ABSTRACT

So you know where you want to get to and you have perhaps involved outside consultants, but still you are left with the decision: how are we going to get there?

Later chapters look in detail at some of the techniques of change in organisations, and especially their application to schools. In this chapter we look at how policies are devised and implemented and at the role of professional development activities in the context of organisational objectives. We explore the potentially circular relationship between organisational objectives, professional and policy development: successful synthesis of policy and practice should always revolve around professional development activities. We look at the links with policy in a desire to encourage the existence of policy documents that are living entities, driven by real-world concerns and objectives and fuelled in their delivery by effective professional development.
