ABSTRACT

Syntax, from Greek syntassein (to arrange together), refers to the study of the ways in which words are combined to form sentences. In many traditional accounts of language four levels of language were postulated:

1 Phonology: dealing with sounds and combinations of sounds 2 Morphology: dealing with word formation and including inflection

(cook/cooks/cooked) and derivation (amalgam/amalgamate) 3 Syntax: dealing with the rules for combining words into acceptable sentences:

I saw the big brown cat yesterday. *I the saw brown yesterday cat big. He can come. *Come can he?
