ABSTRACT

The word fact is used in a variety of ways, some of them inaccurate or misleading. In the phrase the true facts as in:

She tried to unearth the true facts.

the adjective is redundant, since something that is untrue cannot be a fact. Often, fact is used as a filler or discourse marker, included more for emphasis or

linkage than for its meaning:

As a matter of fact, I don’t think so. In fact, you’re probably right.
