ABSTRACT
The word lingo probably comes from Portuguese lingoa (language, tongue) and it tends to be used contemptuously for:
1 non-native varieties of languages, such as pidgins, which have often been referred to as ‘bastard lingos’
2 foreign languages, especially non-prestigious ones:
I don’t understand the lingo.
