ABSTRACT
Compared to the United States, agriculture in the European Communities (EC) has some distinct characteristics which go some way in explaining differences in agricultural policies. In 1980, total land used for agricultural purposes in the EC was less than one quarter as compared to the US, whereas the economically active population in EC agriculture was almost four times the number in the US (see Table 5.1).
