ABSTRACT

A distinction may be drawn between two different types of evolutionary change that operate in man. On the one hand, there is evolution mediated by genetic transmission; and on the other, evolution mediated by cultural transmission. The former is often called evolution in the Darwinian mode and the latter cultural or psycho-social evolution. Perhaps the best labels for differentiating between them were provided by Medawar (1957), who referred to them respectively as ‘endosomatic’ and ‘exosomatic’ evolution.
