ABSTRACT

The geographical division of the Arab world Briefly consider Table 1.1. It shows, amongst other features, that the citizens of some Arab states such as Saudi Arabia enjoy both considerable wealth (as measured in terms of gross national product (GNP) per capita) and the prospects of a moderately high life expectancy. People in other Arab countries such as Yemen are much less fortunate on both counts. But what do statements such as these indicate about Western as opposed to Arab perspectives on development?
