ABSTRACT

As my insight deepened I found that, like my col1eagues, I could make significant shifts in patients' material as presented in the treatment hours; I could induce greater hope and therefore bigger commitment and more and more valuable unconscious cooperation, and indeed it was all very fine and dandy, and I planned to spend the remainder of my professional life practising psychotherapy . At one time I could have been heard saying that there is no therapy except on the basis of fifty minutes five times a week, going on for as many years as necessary, done by a trained psychoanalyst.
